Recently, Darrell Burgan began composing ambient music under the Palancar pseudonym again after a period of some quiet. Where his previous release, Counting Raindrops  was a subdued study of reflection and emotion, his latest release Shani hearkens back to his fascination with the planets of our solar system. In his previous planetary releases, Darrell focused on Mars with Elysium Planitia , and on Earth's moon with Serenitatis . With Shani , Darrell pays a visit to one of the most mysterious...

Sometime a few years ago, Scott Turner (of Not Your Average Hippy) and Darrell Burgan (of Palancar) decided to take a weekend off, travel to a lovely retreat by the water, and spend a few days immersing themselves as deeply as possible in some ambient music composition.  While these two artists had worked on projects together before, these face to face sessions struck a chord deep within each of them. The music that came from these sessions seemed to them to be exactly what their ambient music...

After several years away from live performance, Darrell Burgan of Palancar had a wild hair and decided to put together a live set, just for the fun of it. This recording is the unedited result of that live set. Performed live on StillStream.com on Rebekkah Hilgraves' excellent program At Water's Edge , you hear in this recording exactly what the audience heard that night, warts and all. Please visit Palancar on the net at www.palancar.net . Please visit At Water's Edge on the net at...

One of the aspects of electronic music that I appreciate most is the freedom to experiment, to pursue whatever music seems right at the time.  After all, it is about the love for the art, which to me really means that it is about having fun with what one creates.  With this in mind, in 2014 I decided to attempt an album of downtempo electronica, with a liberal dash of Berlin School style sequences, one that openly embraced rhythm, melody, and percussion.  And certainly, with the strong...

In 17th century Japan there once lived a poet named Matsuo Basho, who authored some of the most evocative, transcendent, and occasionally humorous poetry ever written. Working primarily in the haiku form, his words resonate even today with their imagery, depth, and delicate touch. One of his more famous quotes was this: "A good poem is one in which the form of the verse and the joining of its parts seem light as a shallow river flowing over its sandy bed." With my latest album,...

Palancar - Final Theory Over the past several years, I have been increasingly fascinated by the pulsing electronic music of the Berlin School.  Iconic radio programs like Star's End educated me on this style of electronica and ever since I have been trying to create music in this vein.  Somehow I always ended up starting with a sequence but ending up in a quite different place altogether.  This is not at all a bad thing, in my view; but it does mean that I still have not been able to fully...

This is a re-release of an album I had previously released commercially in 2007 on Blue Water Records. As the years have passed, and with the demise of BWR, I felt it appropriate to re-release the album, this time under a Creative Commons license. This album contains excerpts from various "Ambient Train Wrecks" that I performed on StillStream.com in 2005 and 2006. All recordings are exactly as the audience heard, warts and all. I hope you enjoy it. Darrell Burgan 2018

dw091 - Palancar - Précis In the latest release from his Palancar project, electronic ambient artist Darrell Wade Burgan has gone a unique direction, releasing a deep study of short-play ambience entitled Précis, Eschewing the long form, Précis is meant to be experienced as a set of brief vignettes, each piece a still life image of the mood or concept in the artist's head at the time of composition. Darrell describes this approach as “ambient haiku”, an attempt to evoke a particular idea...

Cluster Balm - Instamatic This album was originally released commercially on Blue Water Records in 2005, and is now available on Emergent World for free enjoyment. Jason, Darrell and Scott all hope that you find this music as  fulfilling to listen to as it was to make. Nearly two years after the release of their debut album 1.0, Cluster Balm unveiled their sophomore effort, entitled Instamatic.  Reflecting the increasing seamlessness of the work of these three musicians, Instamatic delivers...

Cluster Balm - 1.0 This album, the debut release by Cluster Balm, was originally released commercially on Blue Water Records in 2004, and is now available on Emergent World for free enjoyment.  Jason, Darrell and Scott all hope that you find this music as fulfilling to listen to as it was to make. From the original web site: "Ambient music isn't your typical musical listening experience, and Cluster Balm is not your typical ambient listening experience.  Cluster Balm was formed by...

The ancient Egyptians noted the marvelous passing of the sun god each day across the sky and so they came to associate the sun with the concept of rebirth and regeneration.  Or, in more generic terms, that there is a great cycle that the sun follows in its path through the sky.  A fully formed religion took up this concept, a fascinating and perhaps unique synthesis of cosmology, astronomy, and mythology. They called their sun god Ra and the scarab was one of his forms. And so this album is...

I am a Wikipedia geek.  Yes, I admit it.  One of my favorite pastimes is to go to the Wikipedia home page, hit the random link, start reading a base article, and then see where I end up.  Often times I pass through quite a bewildering sequence of topics, usually ending up in quite a different place than where I started. Which is, of course, half the fun. During one of these virtual journeys, I came across this interesting page, which describes the traditional colors of Japan, including which...

A live performance given on Mike Hunter's glorious radio program Music With Space on WPRJ Princeton on February 2, 2019. --- Special note: the download for this recording includes both MP3 and FLAC formats. Unlike MP3, which throws away some of the audio data in order to achieve high compression, FLAC is a lossless format that is identical in quality to the original audio signal. For more information about FLAC, please visit the FLAC home page at: http://flac.sourceforge.net/ As always, all...
